Building your own app while staying home during the lockdown

With the lockdown being extended from time to time, it is unclear how long we are going to be stuck indoors this way.

Let’s not get fussy about being forced to stay in, come let’s make use of an unexpected break to engage your brain and develop some skills or use up some creativity and build a product or something that could be useful, like maybe a mobile application.

Yes, you can build your own app during this lockdown period at your home. There are unlimited problems out there in the world waiting to be addressed, find a solution through an app, and get down with the problem.

With internet access and ample online workshops and courses out there, app development has gotten easy. However, MyCaptain offers one where you can interact with a field professional LIVE throughout the 30-day workshop.

First thing,  What is an app?

The app is nothing but an idea that will ease out a whole lot of things. So getting an idea and evaluating if the idea will make a change in the lives of the users and how much of a success and use an app will be.

Before starting or getting the idea of building an app you need to ask yourself a set of questions

Why should you build an app?

Apps are out there to make our day to day lives easy in today’s digitally advancing era where one doesn’t have the time and energy to deal with smaller issues.

Would you rather Paytm your bill or withdraw cash out and then make the payment?

So once you identify the problem that is prevalent around and work on creating a solution for it. Your solution will develop into an app that will bridge the gap between the problem faced and the solution sought.

Identify the need for an app?

All your app needs to focus on is will it solve the problem? Ask yourself this question and is there a need for this new app, will it bring a solution to the problem? If yes, then go start building your app.

What are you targeting through your app?

Be specific about critical aspects like who will this app you plan on creating cater to, is the problem you plan on easing out a burning issue and will your app really change the game in the field.

Affordability of the app?

Can you afford to turn your idea into a complete product, building apps can be time and money consuming. You will need to include all the costs that building an app will occur, right from researching, designing, developing, and promoting your app must be considered well before diving into it.

Get an estimate of your project and then proceed further with it.

Once these questions are answered and you are confident your idea will make it out as a successful product you can get to the steps of app development.

Layout the sketch for your app

The idea may be solid but you will need to plan out the actuals, start with sketching out the idea and build a list of features you want to include in your app.

  • Identify the features and functionality to be included. To begin with, start off with your Minimal Viable Product (MVP)  By doing this you include the things that are crucial, perfect them, save time, and eventually improvise on the app.
  • Try and eliminate irrelevant features off your list. Divide the items as ‘must-have features’ and ‘good to have them features’ to cut out the extras. Remove the noncore features your app will be handling.

Do your essential market research

After laying out your draft work now it’s time for a reality check. Time to research the viability of your idea once it turns out as a finished product. Conducting your market research is one step one can’t miss. Your market research will put all those missing blocks that your project has to work on.

The actual use and demand for it and the use of the product. The target customers/users for the app aims at.

  • Any competitors you might evaluate before starting your project?
  • Is your app planning on filling the gaps of your competitors?
  • Also, useability of your product, will the masses use your product and will your app be an actual game-changer?

Give your app a design

The time you assemble all your objectives and functionalities from individual blocks to a single rough piece. The design gives a skeleton-like framework for your app to move ahead and work with.

Design is crucial as it is the underlying factor that will determine the success of your app. It is the UX/UI design that makes your app usable and good. Choose a platform you want to develop your app for.

Development of your application

Choose which approach you want to use to develop your app – native, hybrid, or drag and drop builders.

Native app development means developing an app for a particular operating system. As the name suggests, hybrid app development is used to create apps that are compatible with both Android and iOS platforms. For a starter with a limited budget, a hybrid would be a more suitable choice.

Then there’s drag and drop app building platforms like Appy Pie, AppSheet, and BuildFire that allow you to develop mobile apps with zero coding knowledge. You just have to choose a template or drag and drop elements and your app will be ready in no time.

Choose the right programming language and build your app. Or you could hire a web developer and get your app development sorter out, you will not be restricted to what you want in your app under here.

Test your app on the device of your choice

Testing your apps is an important stage in your app-building process. By testing your app, you can verify the functionality, usability, and correctness of your app. Testing helps to fix bugs and user experience issues.

While there are various kinds of testing available, the most recommended types would be: Internal Test and the External Test.

Internal testing your app by the development team as if you were the end-user.

While external testing on the other hand requires you to give the app to people who are not familiar with you or your mobile app.

Launch your app

Now that your app is ready to be published, it is time to let the world know and use your app. First register into respective app stores and submit your app there. Follow the guidelines given for the store to make your app store optimized to make the best of it.

Promote and market your app

Time to market your app. Marketing any product is essential for its success, the same with apps too. Pick out the most effective ways to market and promote your application. There are numerous ways to market your app, choose the best that suits your app the best.  Use your website, social media, PR, or word of mouth to attract users to make your app popular.

So these are the basic things you must look into while developing an app, this lockdown, start your research on what you would want to change, and build an app right from your home. Do get in touch with MyCaptain to get some assistance and mentoring on app building from professionals in the field of app development.

It could be any professional community, a photographer’s professional community, a reading community, or even a baking community.

Having some real talented people around you will surround you with talented folks who will give you plenty of opportunities to learn from.

Don’t limit yourself.

Also, these communities help you stay connected with current trends and help you cope up with situations. Though we are all quarantined, virtual socializing sure is possible.

Indulge in a new skill

Push yourself to learn new skills to stay creative! Any new skill we try out is initially challenging.

Our human mind likes anything that is challenging and it builds curiosity more and more.

Use up this opportunity and time to upskill yourself and try out new skills.

Learning a skill will put our minds on super active modes inducing us to be creative and learn it.

Pen down

Writing is a great source to inspire some creativity within you. Through writing, we generate ideas, express those ideas, and self-reflect through writing your heart away.

Any kind of writing works to induce a creative breakthrough.

Some express their creative ideas through poetry while others do it through penning down their thoughts and emotions.

Writing regularly can boost your creativity by keeping your creative muscles active.

With writing every day, you create a flow of ideas and you improve the quality of your work. With all the benefits writing gives in-depth ideas on various items.

So this lockdown, indulge with words as much as you want to bring out all that creativity and writing will even help you in being more creative in your activities.

Get yourself enrolled with online courses that boost up your writing skills – with creative writing or some blog writing.

Use some writing prompts to get you started with.

Move around, exercise regularly

Keep off your screen and get in touch with some natural elements. Stay indoors but do a little stretch or follow a workout routine to get your body some movement.

Facts state that a little bit of moving around does help creativity as we tend to think and be more creative when we focus less and try to not think much.

So if you’re someone who’s been working on some project and suddenly feel all drained out, the best way to rejuvenate yourself would be to go for a walk and distract your mind.

Also a little bit of physical activity does boost your motivation. So get some fresh air and get some creativity induced too.

Have a workout routine that you can follow and stay fit with.

Embrace boredom

Aren’t we all bored of staying indoors and living the same monotonous lifestyle for a month now? What if we could use this boredom to our benefit.

Yes, boredom is a terrible state of mind to sit with but it is the same place where ideas pop out of our minds. Stay bored for a couple of minutes and we start thinking of ways we can change our room decor or mentally start preparing a diet chart for ourselves.

Getting creative is often possible only when we aren’t preoccupied with the same set of activities again and again.

Boredom sets in when things get predictable and monotonous and our human minds are wired to snap out of such situations, that is exactly why we get so restless and want to break away from that state of mind.

So the next you are bored, try channelizing your mind to some imagination and problem-solving activities to think about.

Well apart from these tips to induce creativity with you, spontaneity is the most effective.

A sudden thought might just strike your mind and you are super motivated to do it, so don’t wait, go for it. Stop not till you’re done.

In times of pandemic, every bit of motivation and creativity can be used to make our stay at home comfortable and feel productive.

Different uses of IoT (Internet of Things) in today’s world

The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to connecting the billions of devices around us with the internet so that they can share and use data.

Today, anything from something small as a pill to something big as an airplane can be turned as a part of the IoT. This is all thanks to the super-cheap computer chips available today in combination with the usage of wireless connectivity.

A new level of digital intelligence can be added to simple objects by adding sensors to them. These objects would otherwise be dumb. IoT helps in enabling them to communicate real-time data without involving a human being.

How is the internet of things helpful?

IoT is regarded as a significant frontier that can improve almost all activities in our lives.

IoT is helpful since it can turn almost any device into a smart one. Here’s how IoT is helpful

  • IoT promotes efficient resource utilization.
  • It minimizes human efforts in many life aspects.
  • Enabling IoT reduces the cost of production and maximizes the returns
  • It makes analytics decisions faster and accurately
  • It boosts the real-time marketing of products
  • Provide a better client experience
  • It guarantees high-quality data and secured processing

Where can we actually use it?

You must be itching to know where this amazing tech can be implemented or used. Here are some of them…

Smart home

One of the best and the most practical applications of IoT, smart homes really take the convenience and home security to the next level.

Despite IoT being applied to different levels for smart homes, the best one mixes entertainment with smart utility systems.

For instance, the insights on your everyday water usage can be given by your electricity meter. The set-top box that allows you to record shows from remote. Automatic illumination, connected surveillance, and advanced security systems all fit into the concept of smart homes.

We can be sure that enhanced home security would be further enabled as IoT evolves and makes most of our devices smarter!

Smart City

The smart city includes a range of use cases. These include traffic management water distribution, waste management, urban security, and environmental monitoring.

IoT can solve issues like traffic congestion, minimize noise and air pollution, and even make cities safer.

Smart grids

Smart grids are a special one.

A future smart grid will use information regarding electricity suppliers as well as consumers to improve the reliability, efficiency, and cost of electricity. All this is promised to be automated.

41,000 monthly Google searches highlight the concept’s popularity. Even you might have come across the term on your search box

Industrial internet

Here’s another special IoT application that is sought to have the highest overall potential according to market research such as Gartner or Cisco.

However, its popularity currently doesn’t reach the masses as smart homes or wearables do.

There’s a lot going for IoT in the industrial side of things. So keep an eye out for it and you will be sure to spot some technological marvels.

Self-driven Cars

We’ve seen a lot about self-driven cars.

Google took a jab at it. Tesla has somehow made it work. And Uber too had its own version of self-driving cars which were later given a rest.

Since it’s human lives on the roads that we’re dealing with, we need to ensure the technology has all that it takes to ensure better safety for the passenger and those on the roads.

The cars make use of several sensors and embedded systems connected to the cloud, It also uses the internet, which keeps generating data and sends them to the cloud for informed decision making through Machine Learning.

Currently, there are many complications like laws and policies that are stopping the full effect of self-driven vehicles. However, from what we’ve witnessed so far, we can rest assured that it is one of the best applications of IoT.

Connected Health (Digital health/Telehealth/Telemedicine)

Connected health is considered to be the sleeping giant of IoT applications.

Smart medical devices and connect health care system does have a lot of potential behind their concept. And not just for the benefit of the companies but also for the well-being of everyone in general.

However, Connected Health has not reached the masses yet. Noticeable uses and large-scale successes are still to be seen

Smart retail

If you have yet to see the video of Amazon Go, you should see it right now. It is the eCommerce giant’s take on the concept store.

Perhaps this is the best use of technology in the way we go shopping.

The retail store allows you to go cashless by deducting money from your Amazon wallet. When you pick products from the shelves physically, it adds it to your virtual cart in real-time. It even modifies and changes itself if you are having a difficult time deciding what to buy.

One of the best features of the concept store is that it is cashier-less. You don’t have to stand in line or get in contact with someone. Instead, you can just step out after you pick up your products from shelves.

If this technology is effective enough to fetch more patronage, Its sure to become a norm in the coming years.

Smart supply chain

Supply chains have been gotten smarter in precious years.

The solution of tracking goods as they hitting the road as well as allowing suppliers to exchange inventory data has been in the market for years now.

While it is perfectly logical that it will get a new push with IoT, so far its popularity remains limited.

Smart farming

Smart farming is often overlooked in terms of business as it doesn’t really fit in popular categories like mobility, industrial, or health.

However, IoT can revolutionize the way farmers work. It can bring mobility to farming operations and the capability to monitor large amounts of livestock.

But not many people know about this idea and thus, it has not yet reached the large-scale attention it deserves.

Nevertheless, it is one of the IoT applications one would be foolish to underestimate.

Smart farming is predicted to become an essential part of the agricultural-product exporting countries.

How to become an Android App Developer?

The way we communicate, conduct business, and consume entertainment has been changed a lot by the mobile apps we use daily. Moreover, the way we learn things about the world.

Do you have a killer app idea and you’re ready to turn it into a reality and take it to market?

There’s no doubt that you wish to get your first download, review, and ultimately profits.

But the issue is that you don’t know where to start or how to build an app.

We are here to help you the same way we’ve helped thousands of students across the country build their first app!

What is mobile application development?

It is the process of writing and developing software for small, wireless computing devices (we call them mobile phones – ok, iPhone *sigh*).

Like Web application development, mobile application development resonates closely with more traditional software development.

A unique aspect of mobile apps, however, is that they are built to take advantage of the incredible features each mobile device offers.

For instance, iPhone’s accelerometer is being used in many of the gaming apps and the temperature sensor in smartwatches is used for mobile health apps.

Why choose Android Development?

Android development gives you many reasons to choose it over others. Some notable ones among them are listed below:

License

Since it is an open-source platform, android reduces the cost of package licensing. This also contributes to having low initial investment and high ROI.

They have a vast community that allows you to directly interact with the developers themselves in case of problems or future versions.

Android is an evolving platform

Google keeps changing certain functionalities and releasing the new versions every now and then. So, you get updates on a regular basis which include improvised features that are added to your application.

This is something that can catch the eye of any user but also gives the developers an exciting challenge.

Easy to learn

If you ask any professional developer, they will agree that the time spent behind learning android app development is significantly less than any other technologies.

Simply having the knowledge of Java and languages like Perl, PHP can get the job done.

Who is an Android Developer?

An android developer makes people’s lives easier by developing mobile or desktop applications that help make day-to-day activities easier.

So, if you ask who exactly is an Android Developer, one would say, he/she is a Software Developer who specializes in designing applications for the Android marketplace.

Android developers working in an organization have to create apps with regard to the domain of the company they work on. They can develop simple applications like a calculator as well as complex ones like gaming applications (PUBG, Call of Duty, etc.)

So don’t wait and become an amazing developer today!

Now that you have understood who is an Android Developer and what the job trends, let’s move on and take a look at how exactly you can become a successful Android Developer.

How to become a successful Android Developer?

1. Find out if Android development is for you

If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll have a lot of work to do to become an effective Android developer, so it makes sense that you are 100 percent sure this is the right path for you.

One of the best ways to get a taste of a subject is to give it a go, even at its most basic level.

There are some great introductory online courses that cost very little (some are even free) but can give you an idea of whether Android development is for you.

2. Learn Java (and a bit of C++ and SQL)

Ok, so ‘learn Java’ isn’t exactly a small step. In fact, for a lot of us, it’s quite the leap. But without it, you can’t really be an Android developer as most applications are written in Java.

You should make sure that you’re sufficient in loops, lists, variables, and control structures. Additionally, once you have mastered the basics, you should be willing to practice on your own, which really does make you perfect.

The great thing about learning Java is that it isn’t just exclusively used for Android applications. In fact, it is consistently in the top five most in-demand programming languages in the UK, so you might find that learning Java is a good idea anyway.

You should also look into the basics of C++ as some applications are built in this and also SQL for databases within Android applications.

3. Download everything you’ll need

The studio is built to house everything you’ll need to begin and complete your Android application. It includes command-line tools, a code editor, an Android emulator, a compiler, and many more features.

Alternatively, you can get the SDK without the Android Studio directly, although you’ll need to spend a little time extracting the information from compressed files.

Within the SDK you’ll be able to take advantage of its extensive software libraries, and tools designed for building, testing, and debugging Android apps.

4. Get to grips with the Android API

You should get comfortable with the Android application programming interface or API.

An API is essentially a pre-made source code library and provides groups of classes or packages that enable developers to easily write in code to their applications for certain features.

For example, developers will be able to access packages to build out the functionality of their applications.

You can implement the android content package which lets your application access and publish data on a device. Or even enable Bluetooth or an in-app camera function, to name a few.

5. Create an Android application

Once you’ve mastered Java and become comfortable with API packages, you’ll be ready to dip your toe into making your own application.

Your first application isn’t going to be perfect and you’ll probably become very frustrated with it very quickly!

But once you can demonstrate that you can create an Android application – even a basic one – employers will begin to see your potential.

A lot of junior roles offer in-house training. Thus, employers are often not expecting a hotshot Android developer with multiple apps under their belt to turn up. Moreover, for most businesses, a relatively blank canvas is very desirable.

By using the Android Studio, you’ll be able to create your application in one space and take advantage of forums associated with it if you find you need some expert advice.

6. Get experience

Starting out in a new industry requires time, patience, and hard work to get recognized.

How to improve public speaking skills while staying home?

We all remember that moment when we are called upon to introduce ourselves on the first day of college. How about when you were asked to announce something during the school assembly?

These are the moments that give most of us chills, making us being afraid of what to say and how to say it.

However, public speaking is considered to be one of the most essential skills in the business world

Why?

Think about how you are going to be communicating or motivating your team members if you wish to become an entrepreneur or an inspiring leader for your company.

Are you going to be going to each member and whisper in their ears?

But being good at public speaking isn’t about being an introvert or extrovert. One, despite their lifestyle, can easily learn to become good at the skill

Now, you might be wondering that to improve at public speaking, you need to go out and perform in front of an audience.

It is true that public speaking is best learned through practice, however, you can still improve your skills while staying home.

Check your mic and keep reading…

Write your speech and memorize it

The first step you will take before getting on any stage to give a speech is to prepare what you are going to say.

This will help you avoid long awkward pauses as well as the feeling of gathering your thoughts before you speak.

But why create a material when you are not able to speak in front of the audience?

You can’t always rely on simply winging it as you are giving your speech.

Moreover, preparing your material and memorizing is much more about building a habit. Thus, you should do it even when you are staying home.

Speeches are not like having a conversation, well, not entirely at least. Your speech will have an aim and a message behind it. Additionally, it’s best that you don’t look at what you have prepared too often during your speech.

So… build the habit of memorizing important parts of your speech and avoid looking like a rookie when the time comes for you to say something on the stage.

One thing you will notice while preparing your material is that suddenly you will have much more to talk about. That’s because you would have spent time researching what to talk about as well as your facts.

Build your knowledge, prepare a speech, memorize it, and perform without looking at it.

Talk to a wall or a mirror

Speaking of performing, public speaking, as mentioned earlier, is a skill to be learned only by practicing.

The best way to do so is by practicing the speech you’ve prepared in front of a wall or a mirror.

One of the most challenging aspects of public speaking is the faces and emotions of your audience as you are giving your speech.

Practicing in front of a wall for a minimum of two minutes will give you the confidence boost you require before your actual speech. Try going through your entire speech in front of the wall first then move onto a mirror.

While speaking in front of the mirror, keep an eye on your posture, gestures, smile, and facial expressions.

There’s a rule, common amongst many public speakers, called the “3-second rule.” This translates into you giving a minimum of three seconds of eye contact to each person before moving onto the next one.

This keeps the rhythm going and makes your audience feel like you are giving them enough attention.

Practice the 3-second eye rule with your own sets of eyes while looking in the mirror and then move onto an object nearby. Then come back to your eyes again for three seconds all the while giving your speech.

Record yourself talking

Recording your speech and watching it over and over again to spot the room for improvement is one of the best ways to improve your skills.

While practicing in front of a mirror or a wall, hit the play button on your camera. Once you are done, start watching the recording.

After you are done with all the self-judgment, start making a list of everything you can improve upon. Your posture, the nervous tics like touching your hair, and the speech itself.

Make a list of everything and improve upon them during your next session against the wall. Keep on repeating this process until you are confident in your speech.

Watch and imitate other speakers

Well, what can we say… humans have the tendency to adapt and learn from which they watch.

So hop on YouTube and watch speeches of some of the best public speakers like Tony Robbins and Robin Sharma

Notice how they stand, speak, move around the stage, and interact with their audience. Try to find the top 3-5 tips or things you can incorporate in your own speech from each video.

Once you are done with watching, try to imitate them while giving your speech or repeat their speech but with a touch of your own personality.

Start counting your “umms”

The biggest problem that everyone faces while speaking in public or even to a stranger is using too many filler words.

We do so to subconsciously signal others that we are having issues collecting our thoughts or having the conversation.

We are not telling you to umm stop using them but like try to maybe uhh minimize their use. Ahh… see how ineffective that line was.

Pay attention to how many times you use words such as: actually, ahh, umm, uhh, like, so, well, etc.

Try to minimize their use in your speech or even while you are talking generally. This will help make your speech much more valuable and filled with important information.

A good tip to minimize the use of such words is to maintain eye contact or speak slowly but clearly.

Your audience is not going anywhere. Take your time and convey your speech clearly.

Present your talk to someone you are living with

Public speaking is a skill that most of us learn only through practice and putting ourselves into those positions.

However, since everyone’s stuck inside their house, one amazing thing you can do to improve your public speaking is to present your speech in front of people you live with.

These can be your parents, siblings, flatmates, etc.

Heck… you can even facetime with your friends and ask them to listen to your speech.

One key thing to remember is that you will be doing this exercise to improve your skills. Thus, it is important to let the people you are going to be performing in front of, know that they need to judge your speech.

Without their feedback and criticism, you won’t be able to grow as a speaker.

So sit your family down on the couch and give your speech before or after dinner.

Short film making during the lockdown

Hey, a quick question for you –

What is your favorite short film and why?

There are countless short films that have inspired millions around the world with their message and the meaning behind the cinematic experience.

But the recent COVID-19 pandemic has brought a toll on aspiring filmmakers. If you are one of them, chances are that you were planning to make your own short film but the news of the lockdown broke and you had to stop everything.

But do you?

Do you really have to stop everything even when you are staying at home?

We understand that certain scenes of your short film will need to be shot with a backdrop. However, that doesn’t have to translate into you not improving your skills.

The lockdown doesn’t necessarily mean that you stop working on your skills and learning new ones.

With LIVE video sessions, the mentors at MyCaptain are helping people learn and break into the world of cinema even during the global pandemic.

With this article, we will give you a few tips to help you create a short film while staying indoors.

Let’s not begin by saying Lights, Camera, Action… 😛

Tips to write your script during the lockdown

The Sundance Film Festival receives approximately 12,000 films annually. Out of which, 4,000 are features and 8,000 are shorts, and only 200 get selected.

This astounding fact can make any filmmaker wonder whether his/her short film is worthy enough to watch.

However, there’s only one way to make sure that your film does not suck – having a good script!

A script acts as the blueprint of your movie and determines whether the story of your film is good or not. As a result, it is considered to be the most important part of any film.

But there’s good news!

Typically, you will require space and time to come up with a good script. And well, the lockdown comes with the blessing of silence, free time, and social distancing.

You have all the time in the world to write your script and here are a few tips that can help you write a good one:

  • Turn off all devices and set a distraction-free time slot every day to write your script.
  • Focus on your characters and watch how your story automatically unfolds itself
  • Create conflict amongst your characters
  • Give your story a foundation by using a story structure (we suggest giving Dan Harmon’s story circle a try)
  • End your story with an incredible plot

In addition to the above, we recommend watching other short films and reading short stories. Our brain works and adapts according to what we see and consume.

If you spend enough time amongst other stories, you will get more inspired and might even come out as a better writer.

Tips to improve at indoor cinematography

Let’s face it!

You can’t really go outside to shoot the magic scene of sunset, neither can you shoot a car chase.

But you would be surprised as to know that there are many award-winning short films that were made strictly indoors.

EXIT by Dir. Daniel Zimber is one such example. Its strategic use of dialogue and direction choices is what makes this short so intense to watch.

Here are some of the tips that will help you create enticing cinematography even when you are staying indoors:

  • If your room has windows, try avoiding to shoot against it
  • Cut the natural light by using curtains or gel sheets
  • Take advantage of when the sun disappears but the sky stays lit. Moreover, take advantage of an hour before sunset as well as sunrise.
  • Use particular colors to define the emotion of the scenes better. For example, if it is an energetic shot, its always better to have everything bright in the frame.

When it comes to improving your camera skills, there’s only one way to do it – learning by doing. Start shooting props in your house – take montage-worthy shots of simple objects.

Furthermore, you can simply record somebody having a conversation in your house. This will give you an idea of how you can manipulate the emotion of a shot when you get to the post-production of your film.

Tips that will help you edit your short film

Speaking of post-production, editing your short film is the biggest part of this phase.

Editing is the process of putting your entire film together. It includes cutting unnecessary scenes, connecting the dots between various shots so that the story makes sense, and handling the visual and audio effects of the short film.

Just like writing a script, editing also requires you to isolate yourself and focus on the task at hand. And well, what better time to learn all about editing than now!

Here are a few editing tips to help polish your short film:

  • Remove the ambiance sound and polish your dialogue scenes by using free audio software like Audacity
  • Make sure that your audio matches your visual perfectly.
  • Use free-to-use timelapse, stock footage, and drone shots to set a premise for your shots.
  • Manipulate options like tint, hue, and saturation to bring out the emotion of your shots
  • Don’t be too jumpy with your edits but at the same catch your audiences’ attention with them
  • Concentrate on the eyes. Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch suggests cutting a frame right before a blink because it’s a natural cutting point that works on a subconscious level.

Lastly, a lot of editing comes out of your gut, meaning that many professional editors follow their guts during the process.

If your gut tells you something, its best to follow it!

Learning how to make a short film

Learning is an essential part of the process. Especially, during the lockdown.

We suggest spending at least one hour every day towards learning how to make a short film and then move towards making your own.

Here are some free resources you can use to learn the art:

Scriptwriting

Cinematography

Editing

Filmmaking is a very personalized process and everybody goes through learning the art in a very personalized manner. There are going to be a few things that come obvious to you and some that won’t.

The art of making films can be learned by making tons of films and/or by having a mentor that helps you as the problem arrives at your doorstep.

MyCaptain’s LIVE Short Filmmaking Workshop connects you with award-winning filmmakers who will be ready to help you out even after this 30-day course is over.

It packs with valuable lessons right from getting an idea to marketing your short film, real-life film projects, and a chance to network with other mentees and filmmakers.

Filmmaking might require you to venture out into the world but it is important to keep the creative flair alive even during a pandemic.

So keep experimenting and focus on learning new skills that you can use once the lockdown ends. You know, learn fresh skills to accompany the fresh air…

Difference between traditional poems and Spoken Word Poems

Have you ever read a book that has been made into a movie? If yes, then have you seen the movie after or before reading the book?

If you have then you would have realized how differently the story gets delivered on a screen than on a piece of paper. Where the book gives a laid back and relaxed kind of experience, the movie will be filled with action scenes.

Why are we telling this to you?

Because it will help us understand the difference between the traditional form of poetry and spoken word poetry in a more clear manner.

The general difference between both is that one is written on paper and the other is spoken in front of an audience. You can say that a poem is a collection of spoken or written words that expresses ideas or emotions in a powerfully vivid and imaginative style.

But you already knew this and are trying to understand the distinguishing factor in a better way.

Well… to help you understand both better, we will compare the difference between the two genres of poetry with the two genres of storytelling.

After all, poems are also a form of storytelling.

What is traditional poetry?

When you ask what a poem is, you would probably get answers like “painting in words,” or “a medium for self-expression,” or “a song that rhymes and displays beauty.”

None of this can actually be titled right or wrong.

As mentioned before, traditional poetry is the expression through written words with the use of a distinctive style or rhythm. In simple words, it is expressing your thoughts in a poetic manner on a piece of paper.

You may already know that there are many kinds of poetry. If you didn’t, here are the most common types:

  1. Blank verse
  2. Rhymed poetry
  3. Free verse
  4. Epics
  5. Narrative poetry
  6. Haiku
  7. Pastoral poetry
  8. Sonnet
  9. Limerick
  10. Lyric Poetry

You will find that many of these can also be used in spoken word poetry, so where’s the difference between them?

Let’s find out…

What is spoken word poetry?

To say that spoken word and traditional poetry are the same is to say that a painting is the same thing as a sculpture. Sure, they both serve the same purpose of expression but they are indeed different.

Spoken word poetry is the form of poetry that is written to be spoken out loud. In other words, spoken word poems are a form of poetry where the author will present their poem to an audience, or out load, using narration.

Spoken word poetry is a “catchall” word used to describe any form of poetry that is spoken or narrated out loud. Spoken word poetry include:

  • Stories
  • Poetry readings
  • Jazz poetry
  • Monologues
  • Slam poetry
  • Rap or hip-hop; because they often use rhyming words
  • Stand-up comedy
  • And many more

As you might have guessed by now, spoken word poetry requires more than just meaningful words. It requires gestures, acting, emotional and impactful delivery of lines, use of music, and even a deep voice like Morgan Freeman.

Meaning of traditional poetry

Written poetry, similar to a book, is able to connect the thoughts and feelings of the writer with the reader much stronger than the spoken form of poetry.

For instance, while reading a novel, sometimes you are able to connect to the exact thought-process of the author.

Moreover, you can read a book and every time you will find something new to it. A new lesson to be learned, new value, or perhaps even a new meaning to the story.

Similarly, while reading a written poem, you will find yourself looking for meaning hidden between lines. Every time you read a poem, you will find yourself understanding it more and finding a new meaning to the entire piece.

The format of the poem also plays a big role. The space between paragraphs indicates that a new verse is starting and with it a new chapter, so to speak.

Even though traditional poetry can be read out loud, it is not the same as spoken word poetry. If you go to poetry readings, you will find the narrator stop between lines or verses. That time is given so that you can let those words sink in and give them a thought.

The purpose behind traditional poetry is simple, expression of personal thoughts in the highest artistic manner as possible.

When you sit down to write a poem, you will find yourself rewriting it and changing the words over and over again. That’s because your focus is to express your thoughts in the most artistic way possible.

You are hoping that your readers understand the meaning behind your words without you throwing them all out there.

Meaning of the spoken word poetry

The difference between tradition and spoken word is in the way that they are delivered. Traditional poems require the writer to express fully on a paper. Whereas, the spoken word poetry brings the element of delivery with it.

Think about how a movie is so different from the book that it is based off. The stories are often completely different, right?

That’s not all of it though…

While watching a movie, you will find yourself to be much more immersed in the story.

You will be more emotionally involved with a movie scene than the words on a book. Each scene will drive a particular impact on your mind and each dialogue will bring out a certain reaction.

The same goes for spoken work poetry and traditional poetry. While reading words, you will have much more time to think about and find the meaning behind them.

However, while attending a spoken word session, you will find yourself to be able to quickly connect with the narrator. You will know exactly what the narrator is saying and will hardly need to put an effort behind visualizing.

That’s because of the way those lines are being delivered.

When there’s a break between lines, it is so that you can see the reaction of the audience. Unlike, written poetry, there’s no need to let the words sink in because they are already with you.

Why?

The element of live performance that spoken word poetry brings. The audience will always immediately have the, “Ohh, I feel you…” kind of connection with the spoken words

To conclude,

The meaning behind poetry is simple, expressing one’s thoughts, emotions, and feelings in a personal manner. What makes spoken word poetry different is using these thoughts, emotions, and feelings to provoke a reaction in the audience.
