When people think of creative writing, they usually think of fiction or poetry, but it’s important to remember that creative nonfiction exists too.

It is the kind of writing that takes an out-of-the-box approach to its subject.

It is also a huge difference from academic, technical, or news writing, which is normally dry and mostly factual.

What is Creative Writing?

Creative writing displays imagination.

Creative writing is an art form at its finest.

Some even go as far as to call it the art of making things up.

It’s imaginative writing done in a way that isn’t academic or technical but can still attract an audience.

It can be any type of writing that is original and self-expressive.

A news article, for example, isn’t considered creative because the goal would be to present facts and not the feelings of the writer.

The purpose of it is to entertain people as well as share the experiences that make us all human, like love or loss.

If you want to try it out yourself, remember that the first step is to use your imagination.

What are the types and forms of Creative Writing?

Each type of these writing genres has a distinct aim.

There are four types of creative writing, they are;

1. Descriptive:

Descriptive writing helps a reader imagine a character, place, experience and more in extreme detail.

Also known as argumentation, persuasive writing is used to help the reader understand the writers point better.

3. Narrative:

A narrative is just presenting connected events in order to make a good story out of it.

4. Expository:

This style of writing is used to reveal or put out information about a certain party.

It is one of the most typical types of writing and can be seen in magazines, newspapers and articles.

Creative writing takes on many forms, some of them are;

1. Poetry

Poetry evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness.

In poetry, the only rule is that there are no rules. You are not bound to write something that doesn’t interest you, and you can be as creative as you want to be.

There are different types of poetry too, the most common ones are free verse, haiku, sonnets and limericks.

2. Novels

A novel tells a story about people and events that are not real.

A novel is a book that tells a story with connected events. Most novels are around over 40,000 words long but some can go up to 80,000 to 100,000 words.

Some novel genres are mysteries, romance, thrillers and fantasy.

3. Short stories

Stories that are around 5000 words are called short stories.

Short stories are normally works of fiction that are around 5,000-10,000 words long. They are pretty similar to novels, the biggest difference is the length.

How to begin creative writing?

Writing can be intimidating for anyone.

When you are just starting to experiment with creative writing, it’s good to remember that not everyone writes at the same pace.

Something that might take you days to write, could take someone else a few hours.

It’s good to remind yourself that everyone works differently and not compare yourself with other writers.

Some other tips to keep in mind when you are starting out are;

1. Find the right tone.

Every writer’s tone is as unique as a snowflake, but finding your groove can take a bit of time.

You should be sure to experiment with different tones and ways to find the one that suits you the best.

2. Take time to find your writing style.

Every writer has to take their own sweet time while finding out what type of writing works for them.

If you’ve noticed, no two books are ever written the same way. Even when written by the same author, to a trained eye, you will see subtle nuances in the way the book is written.

3. Make time for your writing.

Making time to write can be a hard task for any of us, but when you don’t make time to focus on something that you love, you could end up losing motivation to do it.

Even putting aside a few minutes every day can help keep your passion alive.

4. Make the effort to expand your vocabulary.

Growing your vocabulary can help you not only sound better but can help with your reach, by improving your vocabulary you can effortless knit the story together.

Creative writing can be an outlet to help you get some of those hard to understand emotions out of your head.
